Local athletes captured eight national titles at the Canadian track and field championships. The four-day meet concluded Saturday.

Josh Cassidy of Guelph claimed three of the titles in the men’s wheelchair races as he won the 800 metres, 1,500m and 5,000m. In each race, Jean-Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke was second.

Cassidy finished the 800m in 1:45.56 and won by 0.18 seconds. He completed the 1,500m in 3:21.85 and won by 0.46 seconds. Cassidy had a little bit of breathing room in the 5,000m as he finished in 12:19.93 and won by 16.35 seconds.

Reid Coolsaet of the Speed River Track and Field Club won two national titles. He won the men’s 5,000m in 14:09.83, winning by 1.24 seconds over runner-up Ben Hubers. Andrew Nixon of the Speed River club was seventh in 15:15.71.
