Guelph, ON - The University of Guelph cross country teams had strong showings as they kicked off their 2015 season.  The team hosted the New Balance Vic Matthews Open at the University of Guelph Arboretum Saturday (Sept. 19).  The meet attracted teams from across the country including four of the top five teams in the CIS on the women's side and the top two teams on the men's side.  The women raced first, early on a wall of four Gryphon athletes appeared at the front of the pack along with Canadian Cross Country Champion Rachel Hannah and Colleen Wilson of Dalhousie.  The lead six quickly separated themselves from the pack and began the process of battling amongst themselves. The veteran Hannah, gapped the field on the third lap and would go on to the victory.  Behind her three Gryphons would come through in close succession, Katrina Allison finishing second overall and the top collegian in the race, she was closely followed by teammates Katelyn Ayers and Sophie Watts.  Wilson grabbed the fifth spot with Guelph's Heather Petrick, running her first race in over six months, placing sixth overall.  With four in the top six and their fifth runner placing 12th overall, the Gryphons took the team title with a score of 22 points.  The CIS's fourth ranked Dalhousie Tigers placed second with a score of 63 points and fifth ranked Laval Rouge Et Or were third with 80 points.  The University of Toronto, currently ranked second in the CIS, finished fourth overall in the meet but were without three of their top five runners.
